The South Shore Lighthouse Route
Enjoy Nova Scotia’s South Shore with easy day trips on the 333, # 3 & 103 highways. Discover authentic weathered fishing villages, historic towns, white sandy beaches, island-studded bays and famous lighthouses. While touring the shore be sure to take in a variety of festivals & events happening year round. Visit Peggy's Cove & Peggy's Cove Lighthouse where the waves crash upon the rugged granite stones and you can mail a postcard from the only post office located in a lighthouse. Discover Ross Farm, Nova Scotia’s Living Museum of Agriculture, a place where the past is a part of everyday life, where ox teams still haul lumber. Be sure to visit the villages of Chester (with its ferry to the Tancook Islands) and you will want to take a picture of Mahone Bay's Three Churches.
Visit the UNESCO World heritage site Lunenburg Waterfront, where fishermen still row wooden dories and where a working blacksmith still plies his trade amidst the beautifully preserved buildings of the old town district. Visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. Nearby is Ovens Park. There are numerous trails and sea caves along the shore... or try your hand at panning for gold on the beach. Please note that this is a privately run park and there is an admission fee to access the trails and caves. Look for a cable ferry that crosses the LaHave River and visit nearby Crescent Beach. Stroll along un-crowded white sandy beaches, where the only footprints in the sand are yours.
Continue on Highway 103 to South Shore and exit # 19 into Liverpool home to the Sherman Hines Museum of Photography Cross bridge into town of Liverpool ( with its privateer legends). Look for right turn onto scenic loop drive towards lighthouse, following signs. Further down the # 3 highway you will find historic Shelburne’ s Historic Dock Street where you will feel you have stepped back in the 1700s of Loyalist Settlers. Visit the Black Loyalists Heritage Site.
Day Trips on the Bay of Fundy Glooscap Trail
This part of Nova Scotia was named Glooscap by the province’s first nation people the Mi'kmaq. You can learn much more about the Mi'kmaq nation at the Glooscap Hertiage & Visitor Centre located just off the 103 highway in Truro. Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy tides exchange 14 billion tonnes (14 cubic kilometres) of seawater daily. The force of gravity of this tide actually tilts the Nova Scotia countryside very slightly! At mid-tide, the flow in Minas Channel north of Cape Split equals the combined flow of all the rivers and streams on Earth. The Bay of Fundy is truly one of the most dynamic destinations on earth. The intertidal mudflats provide a source of food for migrating birds, making this area a birdwatcher’s heaven. Thrilling tidal bore rafting adventures are available on the Shubenacadie River. You can experience the world of fossils and dinosaur bones with a visit to the Fundy Geological Museum and hike the nearby world famous Joggins Fossil Cliffs. Two notable areas for hiking and sightseeing are the provincial parks at Five Islands and Cape Chignecto
